The Mercedes W110 is a 4-door sedan, also the predecessor of the E-class, which was produced between 1961 and 1968. The car is also known under the name "Heckflosse". This name comes from the body shape and is German for wingtail. Although the period of the wings was already over its peak, this somewhat daring shape was chosen, especially when compared to its predecessor, the Ponton. This model was also made in the Mercedes factory in Mechelen.
The car was unique in many ways. On the one hand, this was the first car to be intensively tested for safety. The dashboard was flexible, so injuries could be avoided. The spear-shaped steering wheel was also modified. On the other hand, this was a literal copy of the W111, the S Class, with the difference of size. This had never been done before.
Especially the diesel was a success, because of the reliability and low maintenance costs this was also an ideal taxi car. It was also the first model available with a diesel automatic.
