In August 1970, Citroën showed the GS at the Paris Salon. It was the car that revitalised the small- and large-medium class segment in a completely unique way. After Citroën stopped Panhard in 1967, there was a void in the programme. The beautifully designed Citroën GS filled that -after a development period of years-. The French built the car until 1980, leaving aside the closely related 1979 GSA.The 1971 Car of the Year is a monument in the history of the automobile industry.
The designers, led by Robert Opron, drew a car that was certainly ultra-modern and sleek for its time. The advanced four-cylinder petrol boxer engine with air cooling and two overhead camshafts was special. The revolutionary interior design were also notable. Other features that made a lasting impression were the futuristic instrument panel that included a unique speedometer with magnifying glass. The handbrake integrated into the sloping dashboard by the designers was another special feature.
