KLM had been operating Lockheed Constellations since 1946. The in many ways more capable L-1049G Super Constellation entered the fleet in 1953. They could travel longer distances due to the addition of fuel tanks at the wingtips for an additional 2271 liters of fuel and the weather radar in the slightly longer nose (a Bendix or RCA weather rada) greatly increased reliability in adverse conditions on transatlantic flights. To appear even more modern, the G models were given "atomic" names, such as "Proton," "Electron," or as in this case the "Pegasus."
