On 20 April 1955, the first Peugeot 403 was presented at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris. Pininfarina was responsible for the design. The 403's 1468cc petrol engine was an enlarged version of the power unit from the Peugeot 203 and produced 65 hp. Remarkable for the time was the thermostatically controlled fan, which switched on as soon as the temperature rose above 84 degrees, and stopped as soon as the engine temperature fell below 75 degrees. Peugeot claimed consumption gains of between 5-10% with this and a significant reduction in interior noise. Another novelty was a heating system for the carburettor that responded to turning on the heating in the car. With a fiscal output of 8 CV, the 403 fell into a cheaper class than its direct competitors, consisting of the Citroën Traction Avant, the Citroën DS -introduced in October 1955- and the longer-running Renault Frégate ( all 11 CV).
