Sentinel Dropside 'Tale & Lyle'
Sentinel Waggon Works began as Glasgow-based Alley & MacLellan in 1875 and concentrated on steam-powered vehicles. The Scottish company took over a similar company in Shropshire in 1903 and moved steam car manufacturing to Shrewsbury around 1915, where it concentrated on manufacturing steam-powered trucks, steam wagons, railway locomotives and later diesel-powered trucks, buses and locomotives. The DG4 vehicle (with double gear) was introduced around 1931. During this period, Sentinel together with Foden dominated the steam vehicle market, but by 1934, government legislation demanded a switch to lighter trucks, which marked the demise of both companies. Sentinel eventually became part of Rolls-Royce.
