What made the Rocket 88 so special was its engine, a high-compression, overhead-valve V8 named "Rocket". Originally developed for the larger and more luxurious Oldsmobile 98, this engine was placed in the smaller and lighter 88 chassis. The result was exceptional performance and speed for the time. The Rocket 88's engine is often credited with ushering in the muscle car era and influencing the development of American performance cars.

The Rocket 88 quickly made a name for itself in racing, especially in NASCAR. Its powerful engine and relatively light bodywork made it highly competitive.
In the early 1950s, the Rocket 88 dominated the NASCAR circuit, winning numerous races and contributing to the growing popularity of stock car racing in America.
