After the war, the Austin K2 Ambulance, affectionately called KATY, was used in many cases for civilian purposes. You have already seen our 1:76 scale vehicle in dark green clothing as used by the 51st Highland Division and in desert camouflage in the Western Desert. For its third appearance, the vehicle was painted in National Coal Board dark blue and black, probably deployed in the aftermath of mining disasters and accidents.
The National Coal Board (NCB) was the statutory body created to manage the nationalised coal mining industry in the UK. It was established under the Coal Industry Nationalisation Act 1946 and took over the UK's mines on "vesting day", 1 January 1947. In 1987, the NCB was renamed the British Coal Corporation and its assets were subsequently privatised.
