The Volvo 66 is a compact car made by Volvo at the former DAF factory in Born, Limburg, between 1975 and 1980. The 66 was an improved version of the DAF 66, following the takeover of DAF-born by Volvo. The 66 came in a sedan and station wagon version. The Daf 66 Coupé was not continued by Volvo.
Main changes to Giovanni Michelotti s design related to Volvo's passive safety requirements. Notable were the thicker bumpers, a new 'shift pattern' with neutral position next to forward and reverse, new seats and a safer steering wheel, but the car had also undergone some improvements under the skin.
The DAF 77, originally developed by DAF but never reaching production, was improved by Volvo and put into production as Volvo 343. The last Volvo 66s were registered in 1981. Today, the Volvo 66 has become quite rare. Many examples have been used for the famous reverse races over the years.
