The "Schwalbe" was the first of a long series of Simson motorcycles with bird names. It was intended as a two-seater scooter without a speed limiter and should be able to reach about 68 km per hour. With that it had to be able to compete in the Western world as well.
After discussions with the GDR government in 1963 it was decided to limit the speed to 60 km per hour
by making the third gear a little shorter. This was necessitated by the new "Straßenverkehrs-Zulassungs-Ordnung" (StVZO-DDR), which allowed light motorcycles up to 50 cc with a
maximum speed of 60 km per hour by 15-year-olds.
However, the young people in the GDR usually preferred the sportier mopeds, such as the
"Star" and the "Habicht".
KR51/1 Schwalbe Series
In 1968, the Schwalbe was improved. The engine was modified which increased the power output slightly. The intake and exhaust system was improved, which lowered the noise level.
Externally not much changed, even the color scheme remained unchanged. Over the years, small changes were made, such as black saddles.
