In 1935, the radically new AMD178 was developed for the French army: a self-supporting tank with all-wheel drive and a crew of 4 men. The AMD-178 was armed with a 25 mm Hotchkiss anti-tank gun and a 7.5 mm Reibel MG in a large turret. Some examples were even equipped with a 47 mm anti-tank gun and an even heavier turret in 1940.
Before the war, 376 were delivered to the French army. These Panhards also fought against the Germans in the Netherlands in May 1940. In Zeeland, near Breda and at the bridges of Moerdijk. The AMD178 was superior to comparable German machines and, with a bit of luck, could even take out a German tank. Its speed, manoeuvrability and high rate of fire had to compensate for the (too) small calibre of the gun.
