The Enterprise NCC-1701D was built between 2350 and 2363 at the 'Utopia Planitia' space yards in orbit around Mars. She was the third of probably six Galaxy-class spacecraft, after the prototype and the USS Yamato. The Enterprise-D was commissioned on 4 October 2363. From its commissioning, the Enterprise was Starfleet's flagship. The ship was commanded by Captain Jean-Luc Picard during its eight years of existence.
The Enterprise has a crew of 1014 and can accommodate an additional 5,000 people. The spaceship is 641 metres long. There are 42 decks. The saucer section has 16 layers: decks 1-16. The propulsion section has 35 layers: decks 8-42.
