KLM had a total of 48 Constellations in service in various variants. In 1960, they became redundant with the arrival of KLM's first jet aircraft: the Douglas DC-8. The Constellations were decommissioned. KLM initially failed to sell the aircraft. For a long time, they stood packed on the edge of the apron. Some were fitted with a large cargo door in the front of the fuselage, so that they would be more attractive to buyers as combination aircraft. This scheme did not entirely succeed: only a few were sold. The five Constellations of type L-749 were all scrapped at Schiphol Airport. Fifteen Super Constellations (L-1049) were also scrapped between 1962 and 1966.
