The Bristol Fighter was designed in 1916 as a replacement for the B.E. two-seaters. No.48 Squadron received the first production aircraft and put them into service during the Battle of Arras in April 1917. This baptism of fire was not successful, but it became an excellent fighter when tactics were changed to allow it to fly in the more aggressive manner of a single-seater. By the end of the war, the type had been used for offensive patrols, photographic reconnaissance, escort combat and ground attacks.
The 111th squadron was established on 1 August 1917 in Dier-el-Belah, Palestine as a combat unit. The squadron operated in support of the British army fighting the Ottoman Turks in Palestine and Syria. In October 1918, the squadron moved to Egypt. On 1 February 1920, the unit was renumbered 14 Squadron.
