Herman and Diana Renz, real names Herman van der Vegt and Diana Luycx, were the founders in 1991 of their Dutch National Circus Herman Renz junior. They ran the Nederlands Nationaal Circus Herman Renz junior together until their deaths in 1996.
The circus was eventually sold by Marina van der Vegt (Herman's mother) to the Ronday, Steijvers and Olivier families. The management consists of six people three couples families.
On 22 December 2002, Circus Herman Renz received a royal honour from mayor Jaap Pop during the Christmas period in Haarlem. It was the first Dutch circus to receive this honour. Finance director Anneke Olivier-Steijvers received an award for her efforts to keep the circus going.
At the end of August 2015, it was announced that the circus was in financial trouble. Due to many new rules for circuses, Circus Herman Renz was struggling with disappointing visitor numbers and sharply rising costs. On 13 October, the East Brabant District Court pronounced bankruptcy on the circus.
In 2016, Duursma Groep Events BV took over the circus tradition under the name Circus Herman Renz, with former director Milko Steijvers again performing as a clown.A few years later, Steijvers travelled around with a small tent in which he gave flea theatre performances. Circus mother Anneke Olivier died in February 2022.
