After the huge, heavy 18-tonne SdKfz 9 came the lightest artillery tractor in the SdKfz range, the SdKfz 10 Leichter Zugkraftwagen 1t. Army specifications dated back to 1932, and the development work had been done by Demag in Wetter (Ruhr). The first prototype was completed in 1934, and the production model, the D7, was released in 1937. It remained in production until 1944 without major changes. Subsequent attempts to replace this model did not get very far as the original was considered very suitable for its task.
That task consisted of towing light infantry and other weapons, as well as transporting its crew, up to eight people. The weapons to be towed included the 3.7-cm Pak 35/36 anti-tank gun, the 7.5-cm lelG 18 infantry support gun and the larger 15-cm slG 33 infantry gun. Other weapons could also be hung behind the SdKfz 10, such as light anti-aircraft guns and, later in the war, the 5-cm Pak 38 and 7.5-cm Pak 40 anti-tank guns.
