Hoefbeslag paard + smid (met hoefstal)

The local blacksmith was in charge of manufacturing metal objects. He usually worked in the forge. Near the forge, a travalie or travalje (after the French 'travail') or stable was often set up. In the stable, draught animals such as horses, mules or oxen were shod with horseshoes. A travalie consists mainly of four wooden posts arranged in a rectangle and connected two by two in the longitudinal direction by a sloping beam. At the front on the lowest part of that beam, a front leg of the horse is tied. Attached to the two rear corner posts are two iron eyes into which a horizontal iron bar is slid to which a hind leg of the horse is tied.
