The Jeeps appeared on all fronts and in various versions, with and without a windshield, with a folding hood, with and without (heavy) armament. As a reconnaissance vehicle, as a fast transport vehicle for soldiers as an ambulance and, on airfields, as a tracking vehicle. They were landed in Normandy 1944 during D-Day and rolled out of transport gliders during Operation Market Garden at Arnhem and Groesbeek.
The Jeep, a corruption of the abbreviation GP (general purpose) was fast and manoeuvrable, and was built by the hundreds of thousands. Because Willys could not handle the demand on its own, car giant Ford jumped in. Ford built 278,000 Jeeps during the war, and Willys over 335,000.
