The Junkers Ju87 Stuka, considered by many to be the most infamous aircraft in the history of warfare, was designed not only to inflict devastating strategic damage on enemy forces, but also to instil fear and confusion among their ranks, further reducing their effectiveness as a fighting force.
A Stuka dive attack involved the use of a siren deliberately attached to one of the legs of the landing gear. This siren emitted a terrifying cry that persisted until the aircraft came out of its diving flight and was replaced by the sound of exploding bombs. The Stuka stood for imminent destruction and was the aviation manifestation of Blitzkrieg.
