The Admiral Graf Spee, often called Graf Spee for short, was the third ship of the Deutschland class. It was launched in Germany in 1934 and was named after Admiral Graf Maximilian von Spee from World War I. The ship was at sea at the outbreak of World War II and destroyed nine merchant ships in the first months of the war. In December 1939, the ship was tracked down by a British hunting party and badly damaged during the Naval Battle of the Río de la Plata so that it had to call into a neutral port of Montevideo for repairs. However, the Graf Spee could no longer be repaired in time, was not allowed to remain in the neutral port and eventually the captain saw no other solution than to sink his own ship.
